WATCH: Demi Lovato Delivers Empowering Speech On Mental Health At The Democratic National Convention

Demi Lovato opened up about her struggles with mental health during an empowering speech at the opening night of the Democratic National Convention on Monday (July 25).

The singer, 23, has been open about her bi-polar condition, substance abuse issues and eating disorders in the past, but she now took the opportunity to address a full house at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Speaking about the stigma surrounding mental health issues, she confidently stated: “Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness. But I’m lucky. I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility.

“Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, either because they feat the stigma or cannot afford treatment.”

She revealed that she had been touring with members from a treatment centre, to give other people the opportunity to get help, before urging politicians to support laws that give Americans better access to healthcare.

“This is not about politics, it’s simply the right thing to do,” she added. “I stand here today as proof that you can live a normal and empowered life with mental illness.”

Lovato then transitioned into her sassy self-empowerment anthem Confident, which – along with her opening speech – earned her a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd.

Following her performance, Hilary Clinton tweeted her gratitude towards the star, writing: “Thank you, @ddlovato, for describing your experience dealing with mental illness with such courage.”

Well done Demi – we applaud you too!
