As the world watched President Donald Trump officially welcome French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House Tuesday morning, some Twitter users zeroed in on a clip of Trump struggling to hold the hand of his wife Melania Trump.
The video showed Donald Trump using his pinkie finger to poke at his wife’s hand, perhaps to test the waters, before eventually succeeding in grabbing her full hand after she swayed slightly away from him with a seemingly unimpressed look. The president then nodded as if content.
Within just an hour and a half of it being posted, the video had gotten more than 69,000 views, 200 retweets and 500 likes.
It is not the first time Melania Trump has been seemingly unwilling or reluctant to hold her husband’s hand.
In February, when the Trumps were leaving the White House and walking toward the presidential chopper Marine One for a trip to Ohio, Trump was caught on television news reaching, and failing, to hold his wife’s hand. Instead, he grabbed a handful of her coat sleeve.
A similar scenario played out last May when the first lady appeared to swat away the president’s hand when they arrived in Israel. The following day when they landed in Rome, she seemingly tried to avoid his hand once again.
The first couple’s relationship showed apparent signs of growing distant in recent months when reports surfaced of his alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels.
There have been some displays of affection, though. Last month, the president prevented his wife in heeled boots from falling as they approached Marine One. The first lady also posted a photo of her and the president with a snowy White House lawn in the background.
The first lady appeared hard at work in the days leading up to the Macrons' visit to the White House, taking on “months of preparations” for the state dinner Tuesday night without engaging an event planner, as recent administrations have done.
