England host Iceland in their concluding 2020/21 Uefa Nations League fixture on Wednesday night.

The match is a dead-rubber as far as Gareth Southgate’s side are concerned, with their hopes of reaching the finals for a second successive year ended by a 2-0 defeat in Belgium on Sunday night.

Likewise, the Three Lions cannot finish bottom of Group A2, with Iceland already relegated from League A having lost all five of their fixtures to date.

After initial doubts over the match and suggestions that it could even be moved to either Germany or Albania, Wednesday’s contest will be played at Wembley Stadium after the Iceland squad were granted a travel exemption allowing players to travel from Copenhagen - where they lost 2-1 on Sunday - to the UK and back again.

Earlier this month, the Government placed a ban on non-UK visitors from Denmark due to an outbreak of Covid-19.

The build-up to this game has hardly been ideal for Southgate, with the loss in Leuven coupled with growing unrest over the number of injuries being sustained by players on international duty amid a hectic schedule.

He is facing pressure to rest some of his key stars for an inconsequential fixture against Iceland, though Southgate has warned that there are places in his team up for grabs with the delayed European Championship on the horizon.

There was a dramatic ending to an otherwise drab affair when these two sides met in Reykjavik in September, with England - down to 10 men after Kyle Walker’s red card - netted a 90th-minute penalty through Raheem Sterling before Birkir Bjarnason then missed from the spot in the dying moments.

The game was later overshadowed by the breach of Covid regulations from England duo Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood.
