Daniel Day-Lewis may be planning to retire from acting, but it looks like he's going out with one last dramatic hurrah.

The first trailer for the actor's planned final movie, Phantom Thread, has dropped, giving us a tense look at his latest character, dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock.

The movie is set in 1950s London and follows the world of fashion through Day-Lewis' character, who dresses the most prominent members of society.

However, his world is turned upside down when he meets a young woman (Vicky Krieps), and we see their relationship play out in the first trailer.

Phantom Thread sees Day-Lewis reunite with There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson, their last collaboration bagging the star a Best Actor Oscar.

He is the only star to win three Best Actor gongs in the history of the Academy Awards, so you can bet your bottom dollar he's vying for a fourth with his latest role.

Day-Lewis is also famously selective with his roles, having starred in only four films in the last 10 years, and is well-known for his 'method' acting.

However, over the summer he announced that he was giving that all up, a spokesperson confirming in a statement: "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor.

"He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject."

Phantom Thread is released in cinemas February 2, 2018.
