WATCH: Jimmy Kimmel's emotional plea to Donald Trump amid baby boy's heart surgery

WARNING: This story will enduce tears.

In Monday’s episode of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live,’ the host welled up as he described his newborn son’s heart operation and made an emotional plea to US president Donald Trump and his government, asking them to ensure that every parent is able to access life saving surgery regardless of whether they are rich or they are poor.

The TV star said he witnessed parents in hospital making the agonizing decision whether they could afford to save their baby’s life, as his own son underwent a three hour operation to fix two defects in his heart.

Jimmy, 48, got emotional as he defended Obamacare in the opening monologue of his chat show and talked about the birth of William on April 21, and the little boy being rushed into surgery immediately after his wife, Molly McNearney, gave birth.

“On Monday morning, Dr. Vaughn Starnes opened his chest and fixed one of the two defects in his heart. He went in there with a scalpel and did some kind of magic that I couldn’t even begin to explain.

“He opened the valve, and the operation was a success. It was the longest three hours of my life.”

Jimmy thanked the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the medical experts for taking care of his child but got emotional again when he said he couldn’t imagine what it must be like for parents who can’t afford adequate health insurance and that ‘any decent human being’ wants the same medical access for everyone.

He added: “President Trump last month proposed a $6billion dollar cut in funding to the National Institute of Health and thank god our congressman made a deal last night to not go along with that. They actually increased it by $2billion.

“If your baby is going to die and it shouldn’t have to, it shouldn’t matter how much money you make. I think that’s something that whether you’re a republican or democrat or something else, we all agree on that, right? I mean we do. We need to make sure that the people who are supposed to represent us understand that clearly. This isn’t football, there are no teams, we are the team, this is the United States. We need to take care of each other.”

And Jimmy choked up again as he said: “I saw a lot of families there, and no parent should ever have to decide whether they can afford to save their child’s life. It just shouldn’t happen.”

The presenter ended his speech on a heartwarming note and said William has since left the hospital to settle in at home with his family, and is doing “all the things” babies should do, including peeing on his mother.

He continued: “He’s doing great. He’s eating. He’s sleeping. He peed on his mother today while she was changing his diaper. He’s doing all the things that he’s supposed to do.”

There is no harder job in this world than being a parent.
