Watch Johnny Depp search for Biggie's killer in first 'City of Lies' trailer

Actor Johnny Depp hunts Notorious B.I.G.'s killer in the first trailer for City of Lies - the film based on the rapper's 1997 murder.

In the movie, Depp portrays LAPD detective Russell Poole who was one of the lead investigators in the murder case of the rapper born Christopher Wallace.

City of Lies is the latest movie to debunk the tragic drive-by-shooting that led to Wallace's death, and the trailer comes on what would have been the rapper's 46th birthday.

"A murder like that only goes unsolved if the police don't want to solve it," Depp's Poole says of the conspiracy claims that have surrounded Wallace's murder investigation.

The description of the movie says: "LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp) has spent years trying to solve his biggest case, but after two decades, the investigation remains open. 'Jack' Jackson (Forest Whitaker), a reporter desperate to save his reputation and career, is determined to find out why. In search of the truth, the two team up and unravel a growing web of institutional corruption and lies. Relentless in their hunt, these two determined men threaten to uncover the conspiracy and crack the foundation of the L.A.P.D. and an entire city."

Biggie's song "You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You)" from Life After Death soundtracks the trailer.

The movie is based on Randall Sullivan's non-fiction book LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implication of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal.

It was initially titled LAbyrinth, but was switched to City of Lies.

Wallace's murder remains unsolved.

City of Lies is due in theatres September 7.
