A protester interrupted Labour’s manifesto launch event accusing the party of producing “the same old Tory policies”.

In a hall packed with party members and journalists in Manchester, a young, female demonstrator stood on her chair shortly after Sir Keir Starmer began speaking and heckled the Labour leader over his party’s manifesto pledges.

The young woman, who wore a long brown coat, said: “You say you are offering change but it is the same old Tory policies. We need better.”

As fellow attendees and security attempted to prise the woman’s banner from her hands and escort her away, she added: “We need better. The climate can’t wait.”

The Labour leader responded: “We gave up on being a party of protest five years ago.

“We want to be a party of power.”

It is not the first time the Labour leader has been disrupted by protesters at a major launch event. Last year, he was covered in glitter by a demonstrator during his party conference speech.
