There will be a first-time winner of the Australian Open in the women’s draw as Elena Rybakina faces Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday’s final.

Fifth seed Sabalenka has not dropped a set on her way to the final in Melbourne, having never previously made it beyond the fourth round of the tournament. This is her first Grand Slam final.

Wimbledon champion Rybakina is no stranger to the biggest stage and has had the tougher draw, with wins over world number one Iga Swiatek, two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Ostapenko.

The fact there were no ranking points on offer at Wimbledon last summer meant that Rybakina did not get the boost she deserved, and came into this tournament as the 22nd seed.

A second Grand Slam title would confirm the 23-year-old as one of the very best in the sport, but she goes into the final as a slight underdog against the Belarusian, who was banned from competing at Wimbledon as Rybakina lifted the trophy.

Sabalenka has won all three of the previous meetings between the two players.
