This is the horrifying moment a man with a kitchen knife in each hand bursts out of his doorway and stabs two paramedics responding to a welfare check at his home.

Martyn Smith lunged at Deena Evans stabbing her once in the chest, while fellow medic Michael Hipgrave, known as Mick, was knifed in the back trying to shield her during a horrifying 12-second attack caught on bodycam footage.

He initially claimed he thought the paramedics and police officers were burglars and acted in self-defence at his maisonette in Stephens Close, Wolverhampton, on July 6, last year.

However, the court heard how Mick and Deena knocked on doors and windows for several minutes and announced themselves as paramedics before calling for police support on getting no response.

Ms Evans said: “He ran at me with two kitchen knives about eight inches long in both his hands. I thought he had punched me and I fell back and got pushed out of the door. I noticed my T-shirt was really wet and warm, as I patted myself down I saw all the blood on my gloves.

“I checked my chest and shouted ‘I’ve been stabbed.

“I couldn’t stop the bleeding and I collapsed in the garden.

“The female police officer put her hands on my chest to try and stem the bleeding. I remember grabbing her collar and just said to her ‘please don’t let me die’ and she replied ‘I’m not going to let you die’.”

Through tears she added: “I’m so grateful for everyone who helped me as otherwise I wouldn’t be here today.”

Smith was Tasered at the scene, hand-cuffed and later arrested, saying “what have I done, man, what have I done?”.

Ms Evans was taken to hospital and spent three days receiving treatment, including emergency surgery following complications with the wound.

Mr Hipgrave, 52, of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire was discharged from hospital later the same evening, after treatment for a wound to his back.

In an extract from her victim impact statement, read in court, Ms Evans told Smith: “I came to help you.

“I said your name, asked if you were OK, and then you jumped out and stabbed me. ”
