'Water Protecters' Prepare to Be Evicted From Oceti Sakowin Camp
Native Americans, activists and self-proclaimed “water protectors” prepared to be evicted from the Oceti Sakowin camp in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, on February 22 by North Dakota authorities who are citing flooding concerns in their executive order.
Reports said some activists expressed doubt about the motive for the evacuation and believe that they are being removed to make way for construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, which they have been protesting. Some have said they will stay at the camp, according to reports.
In these videos, the photographer shows people gathered for prayers and explains that they are burning some structures to “dispose of the remains faster.” Other activist sources said that the elders of the community decided to burn structures “instead of having them desecrated by Morton County and North Dakota law enforcement.” Credit: Facebook/Honor the Earth via Storyful
