Water reflections have hidden clues that tell us how choppy waves are

Business Insider spoke with expert navigator Tristan Gooley, author of "How To Read Water: Clues & Patterns from Puddles to the Sea", about how the light reflections in water have hidden clues to tell us how choppy waves are.

He said: "When you see the sun lowering in the sky and then you see this beautiful pattern in the water of the sunlight bouncing off the water. That pattern is called a glitter path."

"The width of the glitter path is telling us how rough the water is. Where its narrow the waters calm and where it gets wider the waters a bit rougher."
