Water has been restored to 6,500 Glasgow homes following a major pipe burst on Saturday (February 1), closing a major southside road.

The force of the burst 27 inch pipe caused the closure and also the flooding of Pollokshaws Road in Shawlands, leading to chaotic scenes. It is hoped Pollokshaws Road will reopen by 3pm.

Residents across Shawlands and Strathbungo were left with an "interruption" to their supply and "filthy water" emerging from their taps.

Pollokshaws Road remains closed in both directions with local diversions in place as work to repair the damaged section of the pipe continues.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “This is a key asset supplying many thousands of homes in the city and our teams have worked as quickly as possible to restore supply.

“By making complex adjustments to our network we were quickly able to isolate and bypass the damaged section to allow the repair to be carried out.

“The vast majority of customers have now had their supply restored and we are making every effort to do the same for a small number of customers who are still experiencing issues.

“We are acutely aware of how many customers have been inconvenienced and how important it was to restore their supply as quickly as possible.

“We would like to thank everyone who has been affected for their patience and understanding.”

Customers experiencing discoloured water have been advised to run the cold water tap in their kitchen until the water runs clear.

Elsewhere, customers in the Gorbals, Rutherglen and Cambuslang have also been facing water issues due to a separate burst pipe on Sunday (February 2).

Customers impacted by flooding should contact Scottish Water’s customer services helpline for support on 0800 0778 778.
