YouTubers are notching up subscribers in a very, very odd way – by posting thousands of videos of themselves drinking water.

The YouTube community of ‘The Drinkers’ simply post wordless videos of themselves drinking water from bottles, usually clocking in at under a minute.

YouTubers such as ‘Alexander Drinks Water’ showcase sometimes thousands of videos of the same person, in close-up, chugging water.

Some claim to be inspired by Andy Warhol – others claim that it’s calming, or simply hydrating.

Some water drinkers have tens of thousands of subscribers, with the most prolific drinking up to nine bottles of water per day.

On the Alexander Drinks Water channel there are three-and-a-half thousand near-identical videos, many with zero views.

Jon Harchick – also behind a video where he counts to 100,000 – told Vice, ‘I’m dating a girl now and it came up in the first 10 minutes we were talking – like, it’s pretty important to me.

‘t’s something I think about a lot. We went on a trip, we went to a hotel and one of the things I was most excited about is there was a brand of water in the hotel room that I had never tasted before.’
