Thousands of commuters faced travel misery after a major rail route from London was hit by delays and cancellations.

Passengers were stranded at a packed Waterloo station as South Western Railway (SWR) services were held up for an hour or cancelled during Wednesday’s evening rush hour.

It followed a person being fatally injured as they were hit by a train at Clapham Junction , one of the line's busiest stations, at 3pm.

SWR warned that services from Waterloo would suffer disruption until 9pm at the earliest, with tickets being accepted on other services.

Pictures from the station showed commuters queueing out the entrance while the concourse was packed tightly as people waited for information.

Waterloo Underground station was temporarily closed to Bakerloo line trains due to major overcrowding caused by the SWR delays.

Transport for London warned passengers to avoid Waterloo station altogether, telling them to find alternative route home.

An SWR statement said: “Following the emergency services dealing with an incident between London Waterloo and Wimbledon earlier today, all lines have now reopened.

“Trains are now able to run on all lines however, as a result of the earlier disruption, trains may still be delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised at short notice.”

The rail operator added that trains would not be calling at Vauxhall or platforms 9 or 10 at Clapham Junction as a result of the disruption.
