Waterloo Road season 14 episode 1 spoilers follow.

Waterloo Road has returned for a new series, kicking things off dramatically with a character's death and not one, but two new headteachers.

Tonight's (September 10) episode saw the pupils move to a new Academy building and Joe Casey as acting head following the departure of Kim Campbell (now Treneman following her marriage to Andrew).

Jason Manford's Steve Savage also made his debut as Joe's mentor and head of another Academy. Dinner lady Nicky Campbell instantly ran and hid as soon as she saw him, but it turned out she had much bigger things to worry about.

Her mum Barbara called her up to come to the hospital. Barbara said it was just her blood pressure acting up and that there was nothing to worry about, and they had a catch-up about life.

"I've never seen you as happy as you are now with Donte. There's only so many times that comes along, and when it does, you have to hold tight," Barbara told her daughter.

It turned out that things weren't as fine as Nicky's mum was telling her, however. A call from the hospital later brought devastating news: Barbara had suffered a stroke and died, merely hours after her visit.

As she broke down in tears in the school corridor, her old flame Steve turned up and gave her a shoulder to cry on, before Donte came to console her.

Elsewhere in the episode, Joe struggled to handle his first day of being a headteacher; the staff rebelled over broken promises and his poor handling of various issues. In the end, he stepped down as head, and Steve took over.

Waterloo Road season 14 airs Tuesday nights at 8pm on BBC One, while all new episodes are available now on BBC iPlayer.
