A water park has been evacuated and two people have been taken to hospital after visitors reported feeling unwell.

Waterworld, in Stoke-on-Trent, was shut down when staff and customers complained of having “burning eyes”, “throat irritation” and “nausea” on Wednesday afternoon.

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) were called to Festival Way at 1.55pm to reports of people feeling unwell and attended with the hazardous area response team and air ambulance.

They said two patients were taken to hospital, and 46 out of 110 people evacuated received treatment by medics at the location before being discharged.

Mike Roberts, from Chester, said his wife and two sons were evacuated. He told the BBC: “Staff were being sick, people had burning eyes.”

Roberts added: “My wife pulled the boys out of the pool and when she got outside she saw emergency services outside.

“They have been checked over by paramedics and my son was asked if he wanted to go to hospital.

“They're OK though, they're on their way home.”

Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

The latest update from the force said officers remained at the scene and continued to support the other emergency services as they helped those who presented unwell.

They added the majority of people had been issued with medical advice and discharged.

A police spokesman said: “Visitors have reported eye and throat irritation and nausea.

"The building has been evacuated as a precaution.

“The emergency services have the incident in hand and urge members of the public to avoid the area.”

A WMAS spokeswoman added: “Waterworld was evacuated after a number of people inside began displaying minor symptoms including watery eyes, a runny nose and nausea.

“A total of 110 people evacuated from the building who were displaying symptoms were rapidly triaged by the team of ambulance medics.

“Once triaged, 46 out of the 110 people received treatment by ambulance staff on scene before being discharged.

“A man and a woman were conveyed to hospital for further checks as a precaution.

Investigations into the cause of the incident continue.
