2022 almost started as 2021 ended for Tottenham.

Despite largely bossing their first game of the year away at Watford, Antonio Conte’s side could not find a way past a home side to have conceded 35 times already this season.

Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son all went close but were denied by the excellent Daniel Bachmann in what looked to be a hugely frustrating afternoon for Spurs.

Indeed, coming off the back of a similar outing at Southampton on Monday afternoon, creativity looks a problem. The issue is even more jarring when Tanguy Ndombele is not selected from the bench though perhaps that signifies just how little he features in Conte’s thinking.

Watford, for their part, oddly seemed to improve once Emmanuel Dennis was replaced for Joao Pedro at the interval and will feel Hugo Lloris’ challenge on the Brazilian ten minutes before half-time should have yielded a penalty.

Play was briefly suspended in the 86th minute due to a medical emergency in the crowd before Davinson Sanchez finally broke the broke the deadlock deep into stoppage time by heading in from a Son free-kick.

Spurs, who remain unbeaten under Conte in the Premier League, just about got there in the end.
