Waves Crash Against Ferry as Strong Winds Batter Washington

Strong waves crashed against a Washington State Ferries vessel sailing off the San Juan Islands on November 15 as an atmospheric river battered the Pacific Northwest.

The severe wind and rainstorms prompted Washington Gov Jay Inslee to declare a severe weather state of emergency in 14 counties.

The National Weather Service recorded winds of up to 46 mph on Lopez Island. The most powerful gust during the weather event was 93 mph, recorded at Mount Baker.

Whatcom County Government said around 500 people had been displaced due to the severe weather, with three shelters established at local school buildings.
