Waves Crash Onto Highway as Typhoon Hagibis Makes Landfall in Japan

Waves crashed over a wall and onto a coastal highway in Shizuoka, Japan, on October 12, after Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in the prefecture that day.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) also issued special heavy rain warnings in the five prefectures of Ibaraki, Tochigi, Niigata, Fukushima and Miyagi.

Warnings had earlier been issued for Tokyo and the central and eastern prefectures of Shizuoka, Kanagawa, Saitama, Gunma, Yamanashi and Nagano. The JMA also said there was a risk of landslides, and encouraged people to evacuate to higher ground.

Hagibis was expected to bring heavy rainfall and possible mudslides mirroring 1958’s Typhoon Ida, which left 888 people dead and 381 missing, NHK and The Japan Times reported. Credit: Shizuoka National Highway Office via Storyful
