Wayne Rooney has announced that he has retired from international football.

The England star, 31, says that he believes "now is the time to bow out" to focus on playing for Everton, the club he rejoined over the summer from Manchester United.

In a statement, he confirmed that he was asked to be part of the England squad for the next set of international matches, but turned that opportunity down.

"Having already thought long and hard, I told [England manager Gareth Southgate] that I had now decided to retire for good from international football," Wayne said.

"It is a really tough decision, and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton, and those closest to me.

"Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege, and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out.

"Leaving Manchester United was a tough call, but I know I made the right decision in coming home to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful."

Wayne added that he will "always remain a passionate England fan", and wished the side all the best.

The announcement also comes not long after Coleen Rooney shared on social media that she and Wayne are expecting their fourth child together.

Wayne finished his international career with 119 caps and is England's all-time leading goalscorer with 53 goals.
