Supernatural tried with its 13th season to set up a backdoor pilot for Wayward Sisters, a spin-off featuring the franchise's female characters.

That plan kind of backfired, with The CW not picking it up for a full series order, but does that mean that the writers have painted themselves into a corner regarding the characters' whereabouts?

Nope! They've found a way to get the sisters back in the action with the Winchester brothers in the upcoming season 14.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Andrew Dabb said they've done some re-jigging around to get the characters in there... somewhere.

He told the publication: "All of the characters are going to make their return one way or the other.

"We found a way to fold [them] organically into the plot line, and some of the hanging chads from the pilot last year ended up dovetailing nicely with some of the stuff Michael's looking to do, and some of the stuff that's going on in our world just generally.

"It all folds together pretty well, but they'll definitely be in multiple episodes this season."

The CW president Mark Pedowitz previously explained the decision to not pick up Wayward Sisters to series, telling reporters that he felt it wasn't "where we wanted it to be".

"We are big fans of the characters and the women who played those characters in the series, but we did not feel creatively that the show is where we wanted it to be, and we felt we had a better shot with [The Originals spin-off] Legacies," he said.

Supernatural season 14 returns on Thursday, October 11 at 8/7c on The CW. The series airs on E4 in the UK.
