It might have felt like a long wait but summer seems to have finally arrived with temperatures hitting the mid-20s across northern Lincolnshire.

However, while it makes a change from the gloomier, wetter and chillier conditions that made up much of the first half of June, many sweating through the sun-baked days and muggy nights will be wondering when we'll get a bit of respite from the heat.

Luckily for those hoping for some more comfortable conditions, the wait won't be long with fresher conditions looking likely from Thursday. The Met Office says a cold front will be "bringing a band of cloud and showery rain running east/southeast across the country".

However, it will "still feel very warm ahead of this", though the highs of around 25C seen on Tuesday are likely to drop by a few degrees by Thursday. Though it will be cooler there will "be plenty of dry weather " with sunny spells though the odd shower can't be ruled out.

Mark Sidaway, a deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office said: “Although we are expecting to see some very warm temperatures this week, it may not be the wall-to-wall sunshine and blue skies people are expecting as there is likely to be some cloud around in places.

“Some areas, mainly central and eastern England, will see temperatures which exceed the heatwave criteria. To be officially recognised as a ‘heatwave’ though, the temperature must be reached for three consecutive days.

“Although we are looking to enjoy some nice warm temperatures, the weather this week does not look particularly exceptional or extreme.”
