Warnings of flooding after heavy rain hits South East, with more forecast this week

Homes and businesses in parts of the country could face flooding, the Met Office has warned, as it put a yellow weather warning for heavy rain in place.

The yellow weather warning of heavy rain causing potential flooding to homes has been put in place for large parts of south-east England, with more rain forecast this week.

The deluge was expected to affect homes and business as well as public transport in an area stretching from Chichester, West Sussex, to Canterbury, Kent.

Some parts of the country experienced heavy rain on Sunday as a heavy band of rain moved through southern England and the South East.

A Met Office spokesman said Plumpton, near Lewes, East Sussex, had received 39mm of rain in 24 hours – more than a third of the average monthly rainfall for the area.

Areas of London suffered flooding caused by the heavy rain on Sunday, including Dagenham Heathway Tube Station which had to temporarily close.

The Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, posted on Twitter that the local authority had targeted areas such as the A10 to reduce the impact of flooding.

Adam Hartley, 50, a creative director at a PR agency, told the PA news agency that he woke to find flooding outside his door in Haringey, and called for more to be done to resolve London’s "unfit-for-purpose sewage and drainage systems".

He said: “The problem is that I live at the bottom of two steep hills in Muswell Hill. So every time it rains the leaves and dirt flush down the hill and block the drains on our road.

"I’m lucky, in that I’m (reasonably) young, healthy and capable enough to put on some wellies and wade through the remnants of the flood."

The Met Office also shared pictures of the varies weather across the country, including impressive rainbows thanks to the wet weather.

According to the Met Office, Monday is due to be cloudy with spells of rain in the west, which would then be "very windy" later on, but heavy rain is predicted to return overnight into Tuesday.

More rain is also expected in north-western areas on Thursday when it is expected to be windy but mild.

The spokesman said South Wales could experience heavy rain and strong winds on Monday night into Tuesday.
