A wedding ring has been found in a ballot box in Greater Manchester, a local council has said.

After voters took to polling stations in Thursday’s general election, Trafford Council said they had discovered a ring someone had left behind.

They did not describe the item in their appeal, but said the owner should phone up and describe the ring’s “distinctive features” in order to claim it.

The council said it was discovered in a ballot box in Cloverlea Primary School in Hale Barns, south of Manchester.

“We really want to reunite the owner,” they said on Twitter, “so are doing everything possible to get the word out there.”

Trafford Council said: “There are distinctive features to the ring that the owner should be able to describe.”

The owner has been asked to call 0161 912 2000.

The council has publicised the find on social media and the local press, but has not yet traced the ring’s owner.

The item of jewellery was found in the Altrincham and Sale West constituency, which was won by the Conservative’s Sir Graham Brady with a vote margin of over 6,000.

Liberal Democrats Angela Smith, who defected from Labour to join Change UK earlier this year, also ran in that constituency.
