The best shows on TV this weekend: 21-23 May

Many will have their minds on the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend as it returns following the cancellation of the 2020 event due to the coronavirus.

The pandemic means there have been some slight changes to the competition as well, but thankfully the usual awkward chats, biting commentary and off-beat performances will remain.

The third seasons of Shrill and Master of None also land at the weekend, a treat for those who prefer to binge.

Although there is one bittersweet item in the schedules as Friday marks the final episode of the current series of Gogglebox

Friday

Great British Menu - 8pm - BBC Two

The cooking competition comes to an end after nine weeks as Andi Oliver presents the grand final.

Four chefs must prepare for an outdoor banquet at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire where they cook for some of the finest scientific minds and inventors alive today.

However, things start to heat up when one of the winning chefs is unable to compete.

Gogglebox - 9pm - Channel 4

Sadly, the 17th series of the much-loved show comes to a close tonight.

But before they go, the nation's telly heads will be dishing out their opinions and reactions to the likes of Mare of Eastown, The Andrew Marr Show and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Saturday

Eurovision - 8pm - BBC One

Following the two semi-finals this week, the main event takes up the bulk of the evening slot on BBC One as we're treated to a musical European extravaganza.

The UK's entrant James Newman is going up against some strong contenders, including Malta's Destiny, Iceland's Daði Og Gagnamagnið and Ukraine's electro-folk offering from Go_A.

Held live from Rotterdam, Graham Norton provides the running commentary.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - 7.30pm - BBC Two

Lily James leads a talented cast including Katherine Parkinson, Matthew Goode and Penelope Wilton in this 202018 historical film.

She plays Juliet Ashton, a writer who in 1946 travels to Guernsey - which had been occupied by Germany during WWII - after exchanging letters with one of its residents who belongs to the titular society.

Shrill - BBC iPlayer

The third and final series of Shrill drops on BBC iPlayer this weekend following its US premiere earlier this month.

It begins with Annie (Aidy Bryant) getting back into dating again while she also experiences a dramatic encounter at the doctor.

Meanwhile, Fran (Lolly Adefope) and Em (E.R. Fightmaster) amp things up in their relationship.

Sunday

Call the Midwife - 8pm - BBC One

Back in September 1966 in Poplar, Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) and Sister Frances (Ella Bruccoleri) help out an expectant mother who is refuses medical care toward the end of her pregnancy.

Meanwhile, Trixie (Helen George) causes a stir at Nonnatus House when learns about a troubled patient's personal life and speaks out publicly.

The Pursuit of Love - 9pm - BBC One

The Pursuit of Love comes to an end for those who haven't watched all three episodes on BBC iPlayer already.

Fanny (Emily Beecham) is dismayed to find Linda (Lily James) living at Fabrice de Sauveterre’s (Assaad Bouab) mistress in France and once again wildly in love. However, the outbreak of war sees Linda return home to England alone.

Master of None - Netflix

The third season of Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang's comedy-drama launched on Netflix on Sunday.

Deviating from the previous series which focused on Ansari's Dev character, this time it's all about his friend Denise (Lena Waithe) and her relationship with partner Alicia (Naomi Ackie).
