SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (6 to 12 September):

Albirex Niigata maintain five-point lead atop SPL

Albirex Niigata Singapore maintained their five-point lead atop the Singapore Premier League after a 5-0 rout of Geylang International at Jurong East Stadium on Saturday (11 September). Goals from Muhammad Fikri Junaidi (30th minute), Ryosuke Nagasawa (59th), Ryoya Taniguchi (79th, 87th) and Kuraba Kondo (91st) seal the big win for the defending champions.

Second-placed Lion City Sailors have to come from a goal down to beat bottom-placed Young Lions 3-1 at Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday. The Young Lions took a surprise lead through Ilhan Fandi (11th), but the Sailors replied through Jorge Felipe (50th, 85th) and Gabriel Quak (91st.

Third-placed Hougang United won a 10-goal thriller against slumping Tampines Rovers, beating them 7-3 at Hougang Stadium on Saturday courtesy of goals from Fabian Kwok (4th), Tomoyuki Doi (18th, 23rd, 33rd), Lionel Tan (64th), Gilberto Fortunato (73rd) and Hafiz Abu Sujad (79th). Zehrudin Mehmedovic (11th) and Boris Kopitovic (42nd, 59th) scored for Tampines.

At the Toa Payoh Stadium on Sunday, Balestier Khalsa beat Tanjong Pagar United 1-0 with the winner scored by Hazzuwan Halim (45th).

Aloysius Yapp reaches semi-finals of World 10-Ball Championship

Pool player Aloysius Yapp recorded the best performance by a Singaporean at a world meet in either the 9-ball or 10-ball iteration of the sport, when he made the semi-finals of the World 10-Ball Championship at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday (9 September).

The 25-year-old world No.20 stunned British world No.3 Jayson Shaw 10-5 in the quarter-finals to book his place in the last four. However, he was unable to enter the final, after losing 8-10 by Albania's world No.28 Eklent Kaci on Friday.

Yapp was also the previous best Singapore performer when he finished in the top eight of the World 9-Ball Championship in Dubai in 2015. In 2014, he became the first Singaporean to win World 9-Ball Junior (Under-19) Championship.

Run for Inclusion to be held on 21 Nov at S'pore Turf Club

This year's Run for Inclusion - where participants run alongside those with special needs - will be held as both a physical event at Singapore Turf Club on 21 November and a virtual event from 21 November to 4 December.

The event will comprise of cycle, run and walk categories from 0km to 20km. Organiser Runninghour will offer complimentary entries to all persons with special needs.

Participants can choose to attend either the physical or virtual event. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, they are required to be vaccinated in order to join the physical event, and will need to show a valid vaccination certification on the event day.

For the virtual runs, participants will be required to upload a proof of their attempted distance and race upon completion of their race to Just Run Lah’s website.

Registration for the run closes on 31 October for the physical event, and 4 December for the virtual event.
