Weird One-Of-A-Kind ‘Glass Egg’ Is Found After Volcano Erupts

A weird ‘glass egg’ found in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption is a ‘one-of-a-kind’ find, scientists have said.

The strange object was found in the aftermath of an eruption on Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano by Tim Orr, a geologist at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Orr said, ‘To my knowledge, it’s the only thing like it that has ever formed.’

The object is a ‘Pele’s tear’ - teardrop-like fragments of glass which form when lava cools extremely rapidly.

But the egg-like structure of this ‘tear’ is absolutely unique, the scientists say - having flown out of the erupting volcano and on to the crater’s rim.

The egg-like volcanic glass is too fragile to be handled - so it will be kept in a glass display case for safety.

'It’s kind of like a balloon,’ said Janet Babb, observatory geologist.

'It’s hollow inside with this thin, glassy shell, which is very fragile. This is one of the things that makes science fun.’

Something that fragile looking, you would think it would have broken into many pieces,’ Babb told HudffPost.
