The weirdest burgers in London, from the big to the bizarre

Beef patty, cheese, onion, tomato, lettuce, bread bun – the perfect combination, no?

While some of us drool at such a burger recipe, others look at it and say “no – we must do more”.

By more, they mean going a little further than a little extra bacon. From burgers big to burgers bizarre, take a look at some of the more peculiar patty offerings available in the capital.

Avocado burgers at Avobar

Thought London was at peak avocado with the avocado ice cream? Nope. Avobar, a new restaurant dedicated to the ubiquitous fruit, will open at the end of August and will be serving up burgers which swap the bread bun for two halves of an avocado. Green fingers, anyone?

You don’t need to be a Greek demi-god to try this burger but you might need the appetite of one. Florentine’s Herculean burger weighs in at 2.2kg and is topped with shavings of black truffle, and comes with portions of both chips and sweet potato. All this tallies up to a £55 price tag – but don’t fear too much for your heart or your pocket, it’s designed to feed four.

Roast burger at Roast

Generally, we wouldn’t recommend eating a roast dinner with your hands. For those who like to get physical with their food, this Borough restaurant has found the solution – a roast dinner in a burger. This burger serves beef sirloin with carrot chutney and horseradish sauce, topped and tailed by a bun studded with rosemary potatoes.

The Ocean King burger at Hyde Bar

This one is a touch more refined. The Hyde Bar at the Park Tower Knightsbridge serves up a seriously sophisticated take on the dish with its Ocean King Burger, which features a whole lobster as a filling. On top of this pricey piece of meat you’ll find slaw and thousand island sauce, and the whole £85 concoction comes inside a seaweed bap.

Coloured burgers at The Green Grill

Brown is so last season – your burgers need to be technicolour. The Green Grill is a travelling vegan burger joint that likes to have a little fun with its buns, adding natural colouring to brighten them up. Choose between bright red beetroot, golden turmeric, green matcha or activated charcoal black.

The Original Waffle Burger at Bird

We may not always think of the Americans as having the most sophisticated cuisines but we have a lot to thank them for in the unadulterated satisfaction stakes. Bird has harmonised two much-loved American staples – the burger and Southern favourite chicken and waffles – and given London the waffle burger. Fried chicken comes lathered with maple syrup, cheese and more, and is topped and tailed by two freshly griddled waffles.
