Welcome To The Area! Bristol Man Finds Gigantic Tarantula On Doorstep After Moving Into New Home

It was hardly the welcome to the neighbourhood present he was expecting.

A man got the shock of his life when he moved into his new home and found a potentially aggressive tarantula in a parcel outside.

The man was curious as to what was inside the package that had been left by his front door in Bristol some three weeks previously.

He opened it up - and was stunned to find a Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater sitting on a bedding of mouldy tissue.

The spider is the third largest tarantula in the world, with 11-inch long legs, and can bite when under attack.

Their bites are described as “painful.” Their fangs are up to 1-inch long, and they can kick hair from their body to also defend themselves.

In some cases, it can cause blindness to humans.

The man took the spider, who was later named Sid, to Highcroft Veterinary Group in Whitchurch.

A vet confirmed it was “very unwell” and showing signs of dehydration.

“Mould can affect tarantulas negatively so, with the exposure to the fungus and being stressed after circulating in the post for so long, I’m surprised it even survived,” said vet Sonya Miles.

She described it as an “unlucky situation” that resulted with the spider not being collected by its intended owners.

Sid was later taken to North Somerset Reptile Rescue to recover, according to the Standard.
