'Welcome to Mordor': Nighttime Footage Shows Airport Fire in Californian Hills

The fast-growing Airport Fire in Orange County, California, prompted evacuation orders on Monday, September 9.

The fire ignited in Trabuco Canyon on Monday afternoon and quickly grew to more than 8,500 acres, according to Cal Fire.

Footage recorded by X user @d3dboy from a vantage point in Mission Viejo shows the fire burning in the hills above Rancho Santa Margarita. “Welcome to Mordor,” the source quipped on X, comparing the ominous scene to the fiery realm of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings. Credit: @d3dboy via Storyful
