Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has welcomed the news that properties in South Lanarkshire have received over £30 million worth of non-domestic rates relief this year.

Non-domestic rates relief lowers bills for eligible organisations, through initiatives like the Small Business Bonus Scheme, and 6,090 properties in South Lanarkshire have benefitted this year thanks to Scottish Government policies.

The scheme has been designed to help businesses by lowering their bills depending on their premises’ rateable value – an estimation of how much rent it could earn if let on the open market.

Businesses can claim up to 100 per cent relief on their rates, depending on their eligibility – helping them meet and staffing and other costs more easily, and helping them to thrive.

Clare Haughey MSP said: “I welcome the news that over 6,000 properties in South Lanarkshire are receiving over £30 million worth of rates relief, thanks to SNP government policies.

“At a time when businesses are struggling, the Scottish Government’s wide range of non-domestic rates relief policies will be a lifeline for many small businesses and organisations here in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, and across South Lanarkshire.

“The Scottish Government’s rates relief policies are the most generous anywhere in the UK – especially the Small Business Bonus, which offers 100 per cent non-domestic rates relief for a wider range of eligible businesses than is the case elsewhere in the UK.

“This substantial level of rates relief across our area shows the value that the Scottish Government places on supporting local businesses and organisations, which is good news for all our of communities.”
