A well known North Wales hotel and popular wedding venue has gone into "liquidation". Reports emerged yesterday that workers had been told that Oriel Hotel in St Asaph had closed after the firm went into liquidation.

North Wales Live contacted the venue. There was a recorded message which stated that the "hotel is now closed due to the company being in liquidation".

The property has been a hotel since the late 1960s after being built as a private residence in the 19th Century. It was also boys school before becoming a hotel.

The news was met with sadness online with it coming "out of the blue". The venue is popular for weddings and this will impact the plans of couples in the area. Someone said a friend whose daughter was due to get married there this summer found out about the news on Facebook.

A bride-to-be posted: "My wedding has just been cancelled."

Reacting to the news, Black Box events, which has worked with the hotel, said: "Just wanted to reach out and send our love to all at The Oriel Hotel after the sad news that it has now closed its doors today. We really are so disappointed after working with yourselves for so many years."

Rydal Penrhos Events said: "All of us at Rydal Penrhos are saddened to hear about the closure of Oriel Hotel. It has been such a special place, creating countless beautiful memories for couples and their families. Our thoughts are with all the couples affected by this news, as well as the dedicated team at Oriel Hotel who worked so hard over the years."
