Merseyside has been home to plenty of much-loved and successful department stores through time - many which have provided a day out in their own right. At the heart of our high streets for generations, before the days of online shopping and orders being delivered to your door after one click, hours would be spent scanning the shelves.

Customers could find everything they needed all under one roof, from beauty concessions to clothing, food and household items. We're reminded of them often, especially as edge closer to Christmas and have gifts to buy.

But with shopping habits changing, a number of established names have disappeared through the years. A number of the grand buildings have had new shops move in or have found a new lease of life - but the departments stores we've said goodbye to haven't been forgotten.
