Welsh hospital sees 'huge spike' in people turning up to A&E this week
Wales' largest hospital has issued a warning for people to only attend its emergency unit if absolutely necessary, following a "huge spike" in patient numbers over the last 72 hours. Cardiff and Vale University health board has advised that individuals should only visit the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff in case of an emergency, reports Wales Online.
The health board released a statement revealing that the emergency unit at the hospital has experienced a significant increase in attendances in the past 72 hours. They said there had been "over 200 more people presenting to the unit than we would normally expect to see".
This surge has resulted in "significant pressure" at both the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough, leading to the advice that people should only visit the emergency department in an emergency situation. The statement reads: "Over the last 72 hours the Emergency Unit at University Hospital of Wales has seen a huge spike in attendances, with over 200 more people presenting to the unit than we would normally expect to see.

"This influx in attendances has caused significant pressure across both University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough and has resulted in incredibly long waits in the department and for admission to a hospital bed. We are urging the public to please only attend the emergency unit in an emergency.
"If you do need to attend, please be prepared for a longer wait than usual. If you are unsure of what healthcare support you need, NHS 111 Wales is available both online and on the phone for healthcare advice, guidance, and for booking timeslots to out-of-hours or the Minor Injuries Unit.
