Wensleydale Creamery explosion as 'bomb' rattles windows and two injured

Two people have been injured following an "explosion" at a Yorkshire cheese factory.

Emergency services were called to Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes shortly after 5pm on Friday, September 13 following reports of an "explosion". from the boiler house. Two people were taken to hospital with " non-life-threatening injuries.

One resident said they saw workers running across the car park. Posting to North Yorkshire Weather Updates on Facebook Janice Metcalfe said: "Looked out of door lots of dairy workers running across to car park area with there whites and hair nets on. Then one or two were running with jugs and tubs of water. Bit worrying.

"Thought it was a bomb going off. Almighty boom. Hope everyone’s okay."

Meanwhile Janey Slader wrote: "Sounded like quarry blowing." Steven Handley posted: "I thought it was a bomb or something like a gas cylinder exploding".

North Yorkshire Weather Updates posted that residents "heard a massive explosion" at around the time of the industrial accident, which rattled the windows. They said: "An incident in the boiler house is still ongoing at Wensleydale Creamery Centre, at Gayle, Hawes. The Wensleydale Valley was filled with sirens from 17.30.

"Locals throughout the area heard a massive explosion! Windows rattled, then a strong smell of fuel."

Yorkshire Ambulance and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service attended along with the police. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Emergency services have been dealing with a workplace accident at Wensleydale Creameries in Hawes.

"We were alerted to the incident at 5.13pm on Friday 13 September 2024. Ambulance, fire and the police attended the scene. Two people were conveyed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"The Health and Safety Executive has been notified."
