West Dunbartonshire Council commits to improving road safety around schools
Thousands of pounds will be spent improving road safety around two West Dunbartonshire primary schools as the council continues its mission to implement 20mph speed limits.
During Wednesday’s Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development (IRED) committee members agreed that £18,000 should be spent on the implementation of a Temporary Traffic Regulation order at the Balloch Campus, Alexandria.
They also agreed that £7000 should be spent to implement a permanent Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) at Dalreoch Primary School which would see 20mph signs and road markings installed near the school.
It comes after a motion was brought before full council to look at primary school campuses in West Dunbartonshire and for the council to commit to implementing 20mph speed zones around schools.
It is expected that the total cost to refresh the signage and road markings throughout the entire school estate will require a budget allocation of £50,000.
The TRO at Balloch would be in place at the start of the new school term in August and reduces the statutory consultation period for a permanent TRO.
The issue was discussed at today’s IRED committee meeting.
Provost Karen Murray Conaghan said: “It seems sensible to go with the temporary option and get things moving as soon as possible.
“I note there is a £7000 difference between option one and two (implementing a temporary TRO at Balloch Campus or permanent TRO).
“Will we save any money when we move from the temporary to the permanent TRO?”
A council officer advised that it was likely to cost the same amount of money to implement the permanent TRO in the future.

Chairman, councillor David McBride added: "Do we know what the situation will be for our secondary schools or is that covered by the same regulation for the primaries?"
A council officer said they would confirm that with the team and bring a response back at a later date.
The paper will also brought before the next full council meeting for final approval.
