West Ham vs Southampton LIVE!

James Ward-Prowse inspired the Saints to a dramatic victory away in East London on Boxing Day.

A lethargic opening from the home side allowed Southampton to take the lead after eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi lashed home with his left foot from the edge of the box following a driving run from Kyle Walker-Peters.

West Ham, who had one win in five Premier League games coming into Sunday’s match, created little going forward as Southampton keeper Fraser Forster remained largely untroubled during the first half.

West Ham manager David Moyes turned to his bench after the break and substitute Michail Antonio made an instant impact when he headed home from close range in the 49th minute before Ward-Prowse restored the away side’s advantage from the spot just after the hour-mark.

A revitalised West Ham hit back three minutes later through Said Benrahma after being played in by Jarrod Bowen, but Jan Bednarek grabbed the winner in the 70th minute after deftly turning in a curling free kick from Ward-Prowse.

Southampton’s first league win since Nov. 5 moved them up to 14th in the table with 20 points from 18 games, eight points behind sixth-placed West Ham.

With kick-off at 3pm BST, follow all the action with Jack Rosser at the London Stadium and Jonathan Gorrie.

16:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

A third defeat in a row for West Ham after a crazy Boxing Day tie.

Southampton get a break

16:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

90:00 - West Ham are relentless but a stray shot affords Saints a goal-kick and a chance to clear their lines.

Jack Rosser from the London Stadium

Six minutes added on and West Ham are still really pushing here. Lanzini is trying to make things happen, Antonio still looks lively and Southampton don’t look comfortable.

West Ham huffing and puffing

86:00 - But, sadly, not a lot is happening.

The game settles

16:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

78:00 - After all that madness, the game has settled.

Do West Ham have anything left in the tank?

Jack Rosser from the London Stadium

16:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

What a game this is. Just as West Ham’s forwards are starting to click it’s all falling apart at the back. Southampton’s fondness for losing leads should provide encouragement for the Hammers.

GOAL: West Ham 2-3 Southampton: Bednarek ‘70

16:31 , Jonathan Gorrie

70:00 - The Polish international heads in a Ward-Prowse set-piece.

Jack Rosser on Benrahma’s goal

16:25 , Jonathan Gorrie

What a half this has been. That’s why Moyes gets so frustrated with Benrahma. He is capable of moments of real quality but just needs to show it more often - that’s his first goal since September.

Typically lethal from the England man from the spot.

Big moment for Antonio

Jack Rosser’s verdict on West Ham’s goal

16:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

Very quick impact with the changes. West Ham have been far more energetic since the restart and get the leveller. Big moment for Antonio, who scores his first goal after a run of eight league games without one.

GOAL: West Ham 1-1 Southampton - Antonio ‘48

16:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

An immediate impact!

Lively start!

16:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

48:00 - Both Antonio and Benrahma test the Saints defence with early efforts.

That’s more like it!

Jack Rosser’s verdict on the double change

16:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

It’s rare for Moyes to make two changes at half time but perhaps the bigger surprise is that Benrahma is still on the pitch, the Algerian was very poor in that first half.

The scores on the doors

Jack Rosser from London Stadium

15:48 , Jonathan Gorrie

This has been very flat from West Ham but there were a couple of signs in the first half that there is space on the break if only they can exploit it better. Antonio will surely be introduced fairly early in the second half. At the back, Broja is causing problems as he drifts between the midfield two and the back four.

Into added time here

15:48 , Jonathan Gorrie

45:00 - Saints have done well to ride out the storm mid-way through the first-half.

Arsenal and Spurs now both 2-0 up

15:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

What a miserable Boxing Day for West Ham so far...

15:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

15:41 , Jonathan Gorrie

Far from ideal

15:39 , Jonathan Gorrie

15:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

35:00 - Elyounoussi gets past another challenge in the box too easily and, while his shot is tame, speaks to the ease in which Saints are getting through.

What West Ham need to avoid

15:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

34:00 - Ward-Prowse is so dangerous from set-pieces.

He’s had a few now and does not need many more invitations.

More bad news

15:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

Both Arsenal and Tottenham are now head thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane respectively.

Could be a damaging weekend in the top four race.

15:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

Tables turning

15:29 , Jonathan Gorrie

29:00 - Where Saints started in the ascendancy, West Ham are now in control.

Perhaps that early goal was the best thing for them.

Bowen the main man

15:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

25:00 - Dangerous corner gives Dawson a platform to get his head on it, although Forster clears and goes down with what looks like an injury.

So far, Bowen has been West Ham’s most dangerous player.

West Ham turning the key

15:25 , Jonathan Gorrie

23:00 - Vlasic and Bowen are starting to cause problems.

The former is brought down just outside the box before the latter hits a free-kick over.

Somewhat of a goalmouth scramble

15:23 , Jonathan Gorrie

22:00 - Bednarek has to clear his lines after Dawson’s header causes a bit of mayhem in the box.

Signs of improvement from the home side, that’s for sure.

15:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

Frustration so far

15:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

20:00 - Bowen brought down by two challenges after a good ball from Dawson but Kevin Friend doesn’t stop play.

You can sense the frustration amongst the support.

Jack Rosser from London Stadium

15:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

This is a big chance for Vlasic and it’s not going well so far. The Croatia international is up against Salisu and the Southampton man has bullied him so far. West Ham struggling to get anything going in the Southampton half.

Slightly more encouraging

15:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

17:00 - Bowen and Coufal link up well but can’t quite find Masuaku in the box.

Not perfect but the best of their play thus far.

West Ham sluggish

15:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

14:00 - Livramento is causing all sorts of problems for West Ham, who just keep giving the ball away.

Not good.

West Ham’s fragility exposed again

15:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

Far too easy for Saints, who barely had to navigate any challenges before getting a shot off on goal.

Moyes won’t be happy.

15:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

GOAL: West Ham 0-1 Southampton - Elyounoussi ‘9

15:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

That was far too easy for Southampton. The visitors had so much time to build up while Elyounoussi was able to pick his spot from the edge of the box. The stands are half empty here and it’s resulted in a flat start from the Hammers.

First attacking intent

15:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

07:00 - Saints have settled well without creating much.

Romeu’s shot from about 25-yards out is blocked.

Very misty

15:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

05:00 - Both teams look to have adopted a 4-2-3-1 thus far, perhaps explaining why things might be somewhat cagey.

Lots of mist around too, making it quite an odd spectacle.

Cagey opening

15:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

04:00 - Not the most thrilling of opening exchanges thus far.

How will West Ham approach the January transfer window?

14:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

The Hammers go into the January window with fresh investment following Daniel Kretinsky’s purchase of a 27 per cent stake in the club and a new head of recruitment, Rob Newman, leading the way.

Kretinsky has warned fans not to expect big spending in the first window following his investment, but the club are now in a far better place financially should they decide to act - and that is exactly what David Moyes wants to do.

Your Evening Standard Prediction

13:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

Both sides have been far from their best in recent weeks, and Moyes will be particularly concerned if Antonio is out.

The Hammers have won just one of their last six in the league, a run that has seen them lose their control of fourth spot in the table. Their problems in attack could be on show again, even against a Southampton team that concede plenty of goals.

West Ham 1-1 Southampton

Early team news

12:49 , Giuseppe Muro

Moyes hopes Michail Antonio will have the all-clear to return after he tested positive for Covid last week.

Antonio missed the midweek Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Tottenham.

His availability depends on when he provides a negative test but Moyes has said he hopes to have Antonio back over the festive period.

“The answer is I don’t know, he has no symptoms and is double vaccinated, hopefully there is a good chance we have him back,” Moyes said ahead of this game.

The Hammers boss admitted he was unsure when Aaron Cresswell would return, after he injured himself colliding with the post against Man City nearly a month ago.

Vladimir Coufal is available after serving a one-match ban.
