The opening night of the Gala Day shows in Bathgate, West Lothian, have been cancelled due to heavy rain churning up the ground.

A viral video circulating online shows the grounds at Meadow Park completely torn up by the heavy vehicles that had to deliver the rides.

Horne’s Pleasure Fairs took to social media to apologise to eager locals and said they have been doing everything they can to try to get the shows open.

In a statement they said that the rides would be closed for the evening of Thursday May 30 only and they aim to launch the funfair on Friday May 31.

Michael from Horne’s Pleasure Fairs spoke to Edinburgh Live. He said that showmen across the country are struggling with the weather.

“Obviously we are frustrated not to be able to open especially after all the showmen on site making such a great effort to try and make the ground conditions better for tonight’s visitors,” he said. “It’s nobody’s fault, the rain we’ve seen over the last few days has just been very heavy and continuous.

“It’s a hard time for showmen across the country right now, with similar situations over in Penicuik and the Meadows in Edinburgh. Ultimately though it comes down to the visitor experience and we strive to make everyone’s visit to the fair fun and enjoyable.

“Let’s not forget Saturday's Gala Day, the priority is to make the ground as good as it can be for Saturday, and if not allowing the public on site tonight helps that, then it’s the best route forward.”

One local commented on Horne’s post saying: “It's not your fault guys but the right decision. Shame on the West Lothian council, the ground is a riot.”

Whereas someone else added: “Right decision guys.”

Another local said puzzlingly: “I’ve just went passed there's nothing wrong with it?”

While a contingency plan for next year was also floated: “In future could a contingency not be in place to use the borough muir if the park looks dodgy on arrival? Probably the same size by acreage.”

The shows are still planning to run from 5pm until 10pm on Friday May 31 and 1pm until 10pm on Saturday June 1.

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: “It’s unfortunate that prolonged wet weather has led to ground conditions becoming saturated in some areas, which has affected a number of gala events in West Lothian and across Scotland this week.

“Thankfully conditions have since improved and good weather is forecast for Saturday, so people can enjoy gala events in Bathgate, Harburn, Mid Calder and Parkhead.”
