West Lothian remembers victims of the Holocaust with memorial day event

Victims and survivors of the Holocaust were remembered at a special memorial event in West Lothian.

The annual Holocaust Memorial Day which took place on Monday, January 27, is a day when the millions of people killed in the Holocaust under Nazi Persecution are remembered, and in the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda and Bosnia.

A remembering event was held at Howden Park Centre in Livingston, opened by Councillor Lawrence Fitzpatrick, leader of West Lothian Council, and was attended by hundreds of of school pupils.

It featured readings and presentations by pupils from Armadale Academy, Broxburn Academy, St Margaret’s Academy and West Calder High School, as well as performances from the West Lothian School’s Flute Ensemble.

Nick Silk, of the Edinburgh Liberal Jewish Community and member of the West Lothian Faith Group, delivered two poignant remembrance prayers before Provost Cathy Muldoon closed the event.

Provost Cathy Muldoon said: “Today’s ceremony gave us all a powerful reminder of the role that we can all play as individuals so that that events like the holocaust never happen again.

"As the years go by it becomes ever more important that we remember those lost in the Holocaust. Thank you to all those that took part today.”
