A man was stabbed to death when he was set upon by a gang yards from his home in south London, witnesses said.

A murder inquiry was launched after the man in his 30s was knifed outside a block of flats in Dunbar Street in West Norwood at about 5.40pm on Sunday.

He collapsed in the street and despite attempts by paramedics to save him, he died at the scene.

A neighbour said: “About four people jumped him and attacked him.

“He was stabbed several times. He was left for dead.”

Police sealed off the residential street near West Norwood train station.

Distraught friends and family of the victim arrived at the cordon sealing off the street before going inside last night. They were too devastated to speak.

It is understood the victim was a father who lived in the street.

A neighbour said: “Police need to do something to get the knives off our streets.

“People are killing each other and it needs to stop.

“It’s horrible what happened today.”

Another resident who has lived in the area for 17 years was “horrified” to hear the stabbing had happened “so close to home.”

“It’s horrible and sad that these stabbings are happening more and more and now.

“More needs to be done to stop these crimes from happening on our streets before another life is lost.”

A Met Police spokeswoman said there had been no arrests.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
