Hero MP Tobias Ellwood paid quiet tribute to the victims of the London terror attack as the Palace of Westminster gates re-opened for the first time since last week's atrocity.

Hundreds of floral tributes have been left on Westminster Bridge, where terrorist Khalid Masood drove his car into pedestrians, and at New Palace Yard, where he then stabbed a police officer to death.

Mr Ellwood, Conservative MP for Bournemouth East, tried valiantly to save the life of Pc Keith Palmer, but his injuries were too great to survive.

The MP was seen observing the flowers and messages left at the scene for the victims of the attack.

Heavily armed police stood guard as the Palace of Westminster gates re-opened for the first time on Monday and the Carriage Gates – which were stormed by fanatic Khalid Masood – were manned this morning by five apparently unarmed officers, who chatted to tourists and passers-by.

Immediately behind stood two armed officers while more armed patrols were in New Palace Yard, where Pc Keith Palmer died, and other parts of the Parliamentary estate.

Outside the gates, a wall of flowers has built up in recent days. Many of the displays pay tribute to Pc Palmer, 48, stabbed trying to stop Masood entering Parliament.

Here are some pictures showing just how many flowers have been laid down in remembrance.
