A man has appeared in court to face charges of attempting to murder members of the public and police officers in an alleged attack outside Parliament.

Salih Khater, 29, is accused of two counts of attempted murder following the incident in Westminster on Tuesday.

The Sudanese-born British citizen arrived in an armoured police van at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday morning. He was remanded in custody after a hearing lasting six minutes.

Khater, of Birmingham, allegedly drove his vehicle into pedestrians and cyclists before swerving towards police officers.

The car crashed into barriers outside the Palace of Westminster and Khater was arrested.

Police said prosecutors will be treating his case as terrorism due to the method of the alleged attack, the targets selected and the high-profile location.

Khater spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and that he was British during the short hearing.

His lawyer, Johanna Quinn, made no application for bail and chief magistrate Emma Arbuthnot remanded Khater in custody.

Khater, who appeared in the dock wearing white trousers and a grey T-shirt, will next appear at the Old Bailey on August 31.

Rooftop camera footage showed his Ford Fiesta mounting a pavement on the wrong side of the road before, witnesses said, it travelled around 40 metres (130ft) and hit a security barrier.

Three people were treated for non-life threatening injuries after the incident.

A major counter-terrorism operation was launched and police carried out searches at a number of properties.
