Terrorist Adrian Ajao reached speeds of 76 miles per hour as he drove across Westminster Bridge ploughing into pedestrians, police now believe.

Ajao, who changed his name to Khalid Masood, killed three people and injured more than 50 others on the bridge before he crashed his car and stabbed a policeman to death.

After entering the bridge from the southside, Ajao mounted the pavement accelerating to speeds in excess of the legal limit allowed on motorways, wreaking carnage as he went.

The entire attack from the moment Ajao struck the first pedestrian to him being shot dead by a plainclothes officer in New Palace Yard outside the House of Commons, was over in just 82 seconds.

BBC London reported that Ajao's car was seen driving around the Westminster area prior to the attack, suggesting he was scoping out the security before embarking on his deadly journey.

Ajao's victims included mother of two Aysha Frade, who worked at a college close to Westminster and was on her way to pick up her children when she was struck.

Retired window cleaner Leslie Rhodes, 75, from south London died in hospital the day after the attack, while US tourist Kurt Cochran, 54, who was walking with his wife, Melissa, was the other pedestrian to die on the bridge.

Members of their family gathered at Scotland Yard to pay tribute to the couple, who had been in London to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.

Mrs Cochran's sister-in-law, Shantell Payne, told reporters said it was "awful, horrible, (and) gut-wrenching" that the attack was carried out in the name of religion.

But she added: "We're going to support Melissa and we're going to try not to concern ourselves with any of that for the moment."
