Ale lovers will be able to enjoy discounts on a range of quality brews at Wetherspoon pubs around the North East over 12 days this October.

A Wetherspoon Beer Festival will get under way on October 9 at 11 local pubs - six of them around the city - and customers will have a chance to try a range of cut-price real ales costing just £1.49-£1.99 a pint, several of which will not have been previously available in the pub chain. Among those on sale during the festival, which will run until October 20, will be a pick of five from international breweries including Racer Session by Central City Brewery in Canada and Who Dat from America's Urban South.

There will be a wide range of reduced-price beers from breweries across the UK too, adding to a choice of up to 30 real ales, all priced from £1.49 to £1.99 a pint. Other international brews featured will be Dinner Ale from Townshend Brewery in New Zealand; Orihime Pale Ale from Ishii Brewing in Japan and All Dog Alert by Yazoo Brewing in the US.

UK options will include the likes of Born to be Mild by Conwy Brewery; Sun Lounger by Fyne Ales Brewery; Salem Session IPA from Batemans Brewery; Mango in the Night by Rudgate Brewery and Sapphire Spoon by Titanic Brewery. Beer fans can also try the likes of Banoffee Pie Golden Ale , made by Maxim Brewery, and Loch Lomond Brewery's The Gloaming.

There also will be ales suitable for vegans and vegetarians plus tasting notes so that customers can learn about the different malt and hop varieties they are sampling from around the world as well as ingredients such as coffee and fruit. They can also choose three third-of-a-pint tasters for the price of a pint.

Of the local pubs taking part in the festival, the six in and around Newcastle are The Quayside; The Five Swans in St Mary’s Place; The Keel Row in Newgate Street and The Mile Castle in Westgate Road plus The High Main in Shields Road, Byker, and The Job Bulman in St Nicholas Avenue, Gosforth. The others are - in Gateshead - The Tilley Stone in Jackson Street and Wetherspoon at the Metrocentre, as well as The Ritz in High Street West, Wallsend; The Fire Station in York Road, Whitley Bay, and The Red Lion in Front West Street, Bedlington.

Mike Graveson, manager of The Five Swans, said: “The festival is a great celebration of real ale. It will allow us to showcase a selection of superb beers, including those from brewers as far afield as Japan and New Zealand, as well as those closer to home.

“All of the beers will be available at great value-for-money prices." He added: “The festival will also give our customers the opportunity to enjoy a number of beers which have not previously been available in the pub, as well as those brewed specially for the festival.”

The beers' tasting notes will be available in the company's festival magazine in the pubs and there also will be a digital version of this on the Wetherspoon app and on its website.
