A branch of Wetherspoon’s closed its doors after a customer complained that a rat ran up his trouser leg and took a chip from his hand, it has been reported.

Customers at a Wetherspoon’s in Trowbridge, Wiltshire were asked to leave the establishment on Tuesday night after the alleged incident, according to the Western Daily Press.

The pub was closed for half an hour before it reopened, the newspaper said.

It was reported that the Wetherspoon’s called in pest control to deal with the problem.

Diner Lucy Wrenn was out with her partner, Reece Coombs, from Trowbridge, when the rat ran up his leg and took his chip, the newspaper reported.

Ms Wrenn told the Western Daily Press: “My partner is eating his chips with his meal when a rat ran up his leg, took the chip from his hand and ran off.

“All we got was a refund, which was going to be a part-refund for the food we were waiting on, until I saw about the rushed drinks and incomplete, potentially contaminated starter we had.”

Another diner, Jade Whatley, said: “We were in there when we got kicked out.”

She claimed diners were not told the reason why they were ushered out of the restaurant, but later found out.

“I feel physically sick now,” said Ms Whatley. “I will demand a refund – no wonder they wouldn’t tell us the actual reason.”

A spokesman for Wetherspoon’s confirmed the restaurant closed because of a rat problem and that pest control experts dealt with the issue.
