JD Wetherspoon, the popular pub chain, has been given the go-ahead by Sefton Council to open a new hotel in Southport's town centre.

The Sir Henry Segrave pub on Lord Street, one of the seaside town's most frequented drinking spots, will see an increase in capacity thanks to the approved hotel plans, boosting Southport's night-time economy.

The forthcoming Wetherspoon hotel on Lord Street takes its name from Sir Henry Segrave, who set a new land-speed record of 152mph in his Sunbeam Ladybird on Southport's Birkdale Sands in 1926.

Tragically, he lost his life four years later on Lake Windemere while attempting to set a new water speed record of 98.76mph in his Miss England II speedboat.

Work will now commence on transforming the currently vacant upper floors of the pub into thirty hotel rooms. Plans submitted to Sefton Council outline Wetherspoon's intentions to make some changes to the ground floor pub, including the addition of a hotel reception, an expanded kitchen area, and refurbishments.

Sefton Council has given the final go-ahead for the hotel site's renovation last week. The revamp will see a change of use for the upper floors of the building, providing additional pub facilities and thirty new en-suite hotel rooms, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The council has also approved alterations to the building's facade and internal layout to accommodate new fire escape stairs leading to the hotel rooms. The renovation project will include the creation of a hotel entrance and reception area.

JH Architects are collaborating with the pub giant to deliver the project, proposing that the hotel rooms be developed on the first, second and third floors.

Wetherspoons currently operates 57 hotels across the UK and Ireland, all situated in renovated spaces attached to its pubs, with 33 of these hotels having been opened in the past decade.
