A city MP has vowed to fight another plan to turn a family home into a HMO. Paulette Hamilton is asking residents to join her battle against a proposal to convert a three bedroomed property on Mason Road in Erdington, into a five bedroomed facility.

According to council statistics, there were 180 HMOS in Erdington alone as of November, 2024. If the latest application is approved, Mrs Hamilton said it would worsen existing problems such as reducing the availability of family homes and "undermining the character of the area".

She said there is very limited parking along the road for residents as it stands. She said: "The ward already faces significant challenges with antisocial behaviour, and approving another HMO would likely exacerbate these issues further."

The MP has set up a petition and is urging people to add their names by midday on February 11.

She said: "I am deeply concerned about the proposed HMO at 31 Mason Road in Erdington. This application threatens to erode the character of our community by removing a much-needed family home and adding to existing challenges such as parking pressures, waste management issues, and the overconcentration of HMOs in the area.

"Its proximity to the high street also risks undermining our efforts to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour through initiatives like Operation Fearless, which has already made significant progress.

"I will be objecting to this application in the strongest terms and urge residents to make their voices heard by signing the petition and submitting individual objections to birmingham-city-council>Birmingham City Council.”
