During the White House press briefing on Tuesday, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said there are no plans for President Biden to declare a national climate emergency this week.
- It doesn't look like we'll be getting a climate emergency announcement this week. I want to make sure that's still on the table, and I wanted to ask if the White House has any concerns that the president might be relying on executive action too much.
KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: So to answer your first question, look, one thing that I just want to step back and just lay out for all of you, the president was one of the first in Congress, when he was a Senator, to ring the bell, the alarm bell, on climate crisis. So this is an issue that has been front of mind for him. This is an issue that has been, when it comes to the climate crisis, a priority.
And taking action is something that he said he will do if Congress won't. And he has been taking action, as we have-- as I had just stated in my opening remarks, since he's taken office. So he's going to take, as I said, additional climate actions in that vein tomorrow, and he's going to continue. He's not going to just stop with the actions of tomorrow.
But I would not plan a announcement this week on national climate emergency. Again, everything is on the table. It's just not going to be this week on that decision.
