What's a FFA Leadership Development Event?

Mar. 13—DECATUR COUNTY — National FFA Week was observed in late February.

According to the National FFA website, the designation marked a time to share what FFA is and the impact it has on members.

South Decatur High School agriculture teacher Lindsey Bedel partnered with the Daily News to honor the impact of her students in SDHS FFA.

SDHS senior Mary Schwering plans to attend Marian University to study biology with the goal to be a D.O in primary care. The following is Schwering explaining, in her own words, the importance of Leadership Development Events in high school FFA.

In FFA, there are very many LDE's that a FFA member can do. A LDE is a Leadership Development Event. These are competitions members can do that will help them develop better leadership skills that they can use later in life. A lot of these LDE's are in the District Leadership Contest. This is a contest for anyone to participate in a leadership based contest. This can be anything from showing a talent you have to coming up with your own AG business for judging.

It is really hard for me to choose one favorite LDE. I would have to say that either Prepared Public Speaking or reciting the FFA Creed are my favorites. Both of these LDE have been really fun to do throughout the years and have taught me many things as well.

I started out with the FFA creed as you can only do it your seventh, eighth, and ninth grade years. While doing it those years it taught me the dedication you need to have while trying to memorize five paragraphs and answer questions.

Prepared Public Speaking taught me the most leadership. Learning how to write my own speech about a topic I am passionate about was one of the best things I have learned how to do.

Speaking in front of people has helped me get the confidence to speak in front of people. Speech is a skill people need to have in life and doing this LDE has made me more confident and comfortable speaking in front of people. This LDE along with others have helped many members, and myself gain more confidence and learn leadership skills that will help them succeed in life after high school.
