WhatsApp is reportedly gearing up for a significant update, aimed at enhancing security and requiring users to input PINs when messaging new contacts.

The move comes as the app aims to strengthen its defences against relentless scams that prey on its user base.

Scammers often target the popular messaging service, attempting to fool users into falling for simple yet effective cons like the notorious "Hi mum, Hi dad" messages. Despite this, scammers are constantly refining their deceptive techniques.

Facing this challenge, WhatsApp seems poised to introduce more stringent protections to counteract cybercriminals. Information has surfaced about an upcoming feature that could allow users to block unknown accounts pestering them with unsolicited messages.

The latest speculation indicates that the Meta-owned platform may introduce further security measures. Notably, there has been talk of utilising usernames instead of phone numbers when adding contacts, which would help maintain number privacy.

Moreover, initiating conversations with new individuals might soon involve the use of a PIN, while existing contacts will not experience any change in interaction, reports Birmingham Live.

The envisaged implementation is designed to mitigate instances where unwanted strangers can send messages simply by discovering someone's username.
